Summer Sandbox
Curriculum
About
The Summer Sandbox Professional Development invites LAUSD educators grades 6-12 to explore participatory learning techniques in a collaborative, exploratory setting. Teachers will work together to embed the new media literacies into their curriculum, and design learning experiences that foster:
In the training teachers will engage with innovative USC scholars; harness new technology; re-configure their classrooms to support participatory learning; create curricula individually and in groups; reflect on their own work and offer feedback to others in face-to-face and mediated contexts.
Who we are
The Summer Sandbox is offered by New Media Literacies (www.newmedialiteracies.org), an education-oriented research group based at USC’s Annenberg School for Communication. Our mission is to support participatory learning, and to provide opportunities for teachers and students to practice the social, cultural and emotional skills needed for success both online and off. Here are bios on the team. We are the academic partner of RFK-LA (Legacy in Action) situated on the Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools campus. It is through their offering of their facility and support that we are able to offer this program to you.
Why we think this is important
We live in a world of constant change. To thrive in this environment, we all need to hone skills that help us to think critically, collaborate, and problem-solve. With these skills as a springboard, students and educators can better learn from the resources that are all around us, connect our classrooms to a wider learning network, and grow together productively.
